Special Opportunities for Elementary and Middle School Students

The elementary and middle schools are very fortunate to have active PTO Creative Arts and Sciences Committees. These parent groups work cooperatively citywide to place artists, scientists and historians in the schools for performances and special events throughout the year.

Another special opportunity for selected students in grades 5-7 is participation in the Days in the Arts Program (DARTS). This week long overnight camp is sponsored by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and held during the summer in the beautiful Berkshires. Selection for this fee-based program is done by lottery.

Students in the upper elementary and middle school with special interest in music are given the opportunity to audition for the All-City Chorus, All-City Band, and All-City Orchestra. All-City music programs require an annual participation fee. These groups rehearse after school and perform throughout the year. Students in grades 5-8 may also enroll in after school private instrumental lessons through the district’s Music Lesson Extension Program for a minimal charge. Securing a private lesson instructor is done by referral as well as a mutually agreeable schedule between the student and instructor.

Visual Art exhibits for elementary and middle school students are mounted four times each year at the Newton Public Schools Education Center at 100 Walnut Street. Each exhibit (except the summer exhibit) is given an artist reception with refreshments from 4-6PM and the exhibits can also be viewed during regular business hours.
