Elementary Schedule Update - 10.21.20

October 21, 2020

Dear NPS Elementary Families,

I am writing to provide an update on our elementary learning model. In addition, please see the end of this email for a reminder of the schedule change for all elementary students on the upcoming Election Day.

When I last emailed you on October 2, we were in the process of recruiting school personnel to fill “monitor” positions in our elementary schools. As I shared then, these monitor positions are critical to lengthening the school day to 3:00 p.m. given that our specials are currently remote. We are experiencing significant staffing pressures this year, not only because of additional personnel requirements, but also because of public health protocols related to COVID-19 (requirements of quarantine, length of quarantine, etc.).

Unfortunately, at this time, we do not have the requisite staff to extend the school day until 3:00 p.m. for students who are currently dismissed at 12:30 p.m. We understand this is a disappointment to hybrid families who greatly value the small group learning taking place on the in-person days. However, I do want you to know that we have not given up exploring options, particularly for our youngest students.

Our team will now shift their focus slightly to determine the feasibility of extending the school day for our kindergarten students in Cohorts A and B. We believe it may be possible that current staffing will allow us to extend the day for kindergarteners. I expect this group to work quickly and have a recommendation to me by the end of October.

We will continue to explore options, particularly for the lower grades, and provide you with updates on our progress. In addition, we will survey all families in early November to learn more about your experience in our hybrid and distance learning models. I look forward to your feedback and your continued partnership.

Sincerely,

David Fleishman

Superintendent of Schools

Election Day (November 3) Schedule Change

On Election Day, the district is programmatically switching the Tuesday and Wednesday schedule on November 3rd and 4th, 2020. This has the following impact on students in our different learning models:

  • Students in Cohort A, who are typically in person on Tuesday, will instead come into the building on Wednesday (and follow their Tuesday schedule)
  • Students in the Distance Learning Academy will follow their Tuesday schedule on Wednesday, November 4 and will follow their Wednesday schedule on Tuesday, November 3 (Election Day.)
  • Students who typically attend in-person on both Tuesday and Wednesday will follow their Tuesday schedule on Wednesday, November 4 and will follow their Wednesday schedule on Tuesday, November 3 (Election Day.)
