Elementary School Dates and Information - 9.4.20

September 4, 2020

Dear Elementary Families,

As we head into the long weekend, we wanted to share key information and dates that will apply to all elementary schools over the next two weeks. Principals will be reaching out with building-specific information prior to the start of school as well. Please review the information below carefully as it will provide you with a roadmap leading up to the start of school.

Tuesday, September 8 - School Staffing Updates

Because students are enrolled in both hybrid and distance learning, and we have staff who are returning to the buildings and some who are teaching remotely, we have made adjustments to staffing at the elementary level throughout the district. This means that you may see some new teachers at your student’s building and may notice that some teachers are teaching two different grade levels. Principals will share with you any staffing changes at your school on September 8.

If you are enrolled in the Distance Learning Academy (DLA), on September 8, Jennifer Shore, the DLA principal, will share with you specific information including staffing and other important information.

Wednesday, September 9 - Cohort and Class Placement Assignment

On Wednesday at 9:00 a.m., both hybrid and DLA students will be able to log into the Aspen Parent Portal to view your student’s educational model selection (hybrid or DLA), cohort assignment (A or B), and class placement. As a reminder, students in hybrid Cohort A attend in person on Mon./Tues. Students in hybrid Cohort B attend in person on Thurs./Fri. Students in the DLA follow their schedule virtually according to their cohort assignment. Please note the following:

  • We cannot accept changes to your selected educational model until after November 1, 2020. After the school year begins, we may consider transitions on a space available basis.
  • We cannot accept requests for movement between cohort assignments.

While you are in the Aspen Parent Portal, please take a moment to confirm that all of your contact information is correct. Communication with families, especially this year, is critical and we want to make sure we are reaching you in a timely manner.

Childcare

We are working closely with our after school program providers to provide access to childcare.  Childcare may be provided either in a school-based setting or at an off-site location. Please contact your school-based childcare provider to learn more about the programming they will be offering. Program contact information is accessible here. Please note: if school-based childcare is offered, it is only available on the days in which your student attends in-person school.

Hybrid Transportation

We are finalizing our transportation plans now and will abide by state guidelines for physical distancing on buses and vans. If you selected the hybrid model, you received a form earlier today to confirm whether your student plans to take the bus. Please complete this form by Tuesday, September 8 at 11:59 p.m. Registration for the bus will close on September 8 and will not reopen until November 1. If you are not registered, we will not be able to accommodate your student on the bus. If you are registered for the hybrid model and did not receive the form, please email community@newton.k12.ma.us immediately.

Hybrid and DLA Technology

As you know, we are providing a device for every student in the Newton Public Schools using a combination of existing devices in the district and new purchases. Given the high demand for devices across the country, delivery dates have been pushed out. We expect the iPads (Grades K-2) and the Chromebooks (Grades 3-5) to ship sometime in September. We will be prioritizing providing devices to families that need one now for the start of learning on September 16. You should have received an email from our IT department inquiring about your need for a device. If you did not receive this message with a survey link, please email: familytechsupport@newton.k12.ma.us.

We know this has been an unconventional start to the school year given the many decisions that have been made in a short amount of time. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we put all the pieces into place for this fall.

Sincerely,

David Fleishman

Superintendent
