Application Process & Time Line for Students who are Typically Developing

  • Thank you for your interest in applying for enrollment in the Newton Early Childhood Program (NECP), the integrated preschool program for the Newton Public Schools. Our families value our focus on social and emotional development through play based learning, and our emphasis on respect for human differences. The application process is as follows:

Parents complete an application and return it to the Preschool Director on-line from this site. Procedural timelines depend on meeting specific application dates. Parents may apply throughout the year as their child turns 3 years of age.  We do accept rolling applications when openings exist within the program. Entrance into the program is first come first served, with preference given to Newton residents and families with siblings who currently attend or have attended NECP. Student age is also a consideration based on classroom age opening. All students must participate in a Developmental Observation.

Students who are typically developing serve as peer models for students with special needs. The Developmental Observation ensures that students entered in the lottery exhibit developmentally appropriate speech and language skills, social skills, and play skills. NECP staff will conduct the Developmental Observation in the context of play-based and other typical preschool activities. Parents are encouraged but not required to separate from their children into the hallway outside the classroom where the observation will take place. Current NECP staff will be available to answer questions. The Developmental Observations are approximately 20-30 minutes in length.

For school year 2019-2020 the Developmental Observation Date is:

    March 19th, 2019, 1:30-2:00PM

-Participation in the Developmental Observation is required for all new students in order to inform classroom assignments
-All Developmental Observations are held at 150 Jackson Road. Please park in the lot and enter the building up the ramp in the center of the building.
-We understand many children have a scheduled nap during this time frame for developmental observations. Unfortunately we do not have flexibility for other schedules since this is the only time staff are available to facilitate these play-based sessions.
