  • Announcement for Families re: Adapted Spring Middle School Athletic Program

In order to support the wellbeing and engagement of our student athletes, Newton middle schools will offer an adapted spring athletic season from April 26-June 11. We are excited to provide this program as an investment in our students at this challenging time.

The season in each school will include a mixture of practices, intra-squad scrimmages, and interscholastic games. Sport rules may be significantly modified based on MIAA state guidelines, and opportunities for play and practice will be significantly less than a typical season. Participants and families who elect to participate should maintain flexible thinking about how students will be able to engage.

Due to limitations on field space and transportation, most sports will be limited to TWO times per week during the seven-week season, and one-half of the usual middle school athletic fee will be charged to participants. Additional enrichment and intramural opportunities may also be offered at each school based on staff and space availability.

COVID protocols will be modeled after the high school MIAA guidelines currently in place at NNHS and NSHS. Student athletes will be strongly encouraged to participate in the NPS student COVID pool testing program available at each school.

Teams in the following sports that have sufficient interest and participation will be offered at each school.

    • Girls and Boys Cross-Country (Grades 6-8)
    • Softball (Grades 7-8)
    • Baseball (Grade 7-8)
    • Girls and Boys Lacrosse (Grades 7-8)

Students in Grade 8 will receive priority for inclusion in each team, and students in lower grades may be added on a space-available basis only. Most sports will include a minimum of THREE interscholastic games with other Newton Middle Schools, with more added if feasible. Cross Country will include TWO citywide meets.

In general, traditional school bus service will be available to practices and competitions as needed, with only slightly limited bus capacities due to current transportation restrictions. Bus service will include buses to games and practices as well as late bus service to Newton and Boston. School coordinators may reach out to parents on specific teams if additional transportation help is needed from families, and families are invited to provide their own transportation for their students if they choose not to utilize bus transportation.

Sign-ups through Family ID will begin the week of April 5, with priority given to Grade 8 students. Click the link to access Family ID.
