English Language Learner (ELL) Screening

When a family indicates on their enrollment forms that a language other than or in addition to English is spoken at home, the ELL Office initiates a warm intake process to ensure proper academic placement.

1. Home Language Conversation
   • An ELL Family Liaison or ELL teacher will connect with your family to discuss your child's background and language exposure. Key questions include:
     • What languages are spoken in your home?
     • What languages do caregivers use together, and with the child?
     • What languages do siblings speak with one another?
     • What percentage of time does your child speak English at home?
2. English Proficiency Assessment (WIDA)
   • If appropriate, your child will complete an age-appropriate English proficiency assessment (WIDA Screener) measuring Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. This evaluation helps us understand your child’s academic strengths and language development needs.
3. Program Placement & Parent Rights
   • Assessment results determine whether your student qualifies for specialized English language instruction. If services are recommended, our team will explain program options. Parents/guardians hold the legal right to accept or decline direct ELL services at any time.

Have records from a previous school district? 

If your student previously received ELL services or recently exited an ELL program, please upload those progress reports into the registration system to help us support their transition.
