Attention Oak Hill Students: Today is Oak Hill's annual Day of Silence. Nearly 4 in 5 LGBTQ students don’t see positive LGBTQ representation in their curriculum, nearly 8 in 10 experience verbal harassment, and almost a third miss school for feeling unsafe or uncomfortable. The Day of Silence is a national movement to highlight the silencing and erasure of LGBTQ students in school, which demands that school leaders take action to be more inclusive." When closeted students hear other students using derogatory homophobic names/slurs or people being questioned about their identifying gender, it can cause closeted students to feel they are in an unsafe environment. This "Day of Silence" will show any closeted students that there is support for them at Oak Hill. Students are participating in this day to show their support and will be listed on a conference email this Tuesday night. They will also have a pass they will show their teachers as they enter the room so you are aware they are a supporting participant in the Day of Silence.
