Esports Team Coordinator - TBA
Coach for Rocket League - Connor Frontera
Coach for League of Legends - Logan FeldeWhat is ESports? ESports is the world of organized competitive video gaming
Why ESports? I know what parents may be thinking,”I try to get my student to spend LESS time playing video games, not more”. Kids are going home and gaming in an environment where there is no oversight. When a student joins an ESports team they are getting the benefit of what every student receives from playing sports:
Social Skills
Cooperation
Team Work
Self Confidence
PerseveranceIn particular, ESports opens up an opportunity for students to become a part of the school community in a way they never have before. It offers inclusivity in ways other sports do not - it is accessible to a wider range of students.
ESports is a growing industry that offers college scholarship opportunities (in 2020 $20 million was awarded to players) and careers, not only by being a player, but within broadcasting, technology, teaching…..and more! ESports fosters a growing interest in STEM for students who participate. Currently, there are 186 colleges across the country that offer an ESports program.
If you are a sports fan you may have seen some of the ESports events that were broadcasted on ESPN. In 2021 The League of Legends World Championship had 46 million views, compared to 106 million viewers for the Super Bowl.
Here at Newton North we are excited to offer this opportunity to students, and look to grow the program to include more games and players. Please continue to check our site for updates!
