Welcome to Bigelow!
Welcome incoming sixth graders! All the teachers and staff at Bigelow are looking forward to your arrival in September. We have collected some information and links to make your transition easier. Please take some time to check out the rest of the Bigelow Middle School website as well.
During the summer all Bigelow students, teachers and families read the same book. In the fall, all 6th graders will discuss and complete activities related to the book. You can go to the One School, One Book site to get more information.
This year we will all read Full Cicada Moon by Marilyn Hilton.
Math Summer Assignment -
One of the most important things you can do over the summer to prepare for 6th grade math is to practice, practice, practice your math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) - and then practice some more!
There will be a Grade 6 Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, August 28 from 9:00 - 10:30.Check out the Guidance Department's

Technology Access -
All 6th graders will have many opportunities to use technology next year. Your teachers have access to computer carts, library and computer labs to insure that students have access to online resources. Please take some time to look over the school's website, there is a lot of information you can find out about the school.
Ms. Summa and the other middle school Library/Media Teachers have made a list of many outstanding book titles for you to look at. This Summer Reading List represents what they all feel would be good, intriguing, fun choices for you to make for your recreational reading this summer.
There are many offerings for you in the Bigelow Middle School Music Department. If you play an instrument, you can sign up for the Concert Band or the Orchestra. If you like to sing, you can sign up for the Chorus. The all-school musical takes place in the spring, and preference in casting roles in the musical goes to members of our ensembles.
All sixth graders are welcome to join the cross country team this fall. This team is comprised of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade boys and girls and does not require any experience, but does involve a commitment to practice every day except Tuesday.
The practices involve training for races that are over a mile long through endurance workouts. Practices are after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
There is usually one competition a week with the other middle schools in Newton. If you want to get into shape, meet new friends, and like to compete, come to the information session that will be announced at the beginning of the year.
Bigelow After School Theater -
All 6th grade students take drama for part of the year in their fine arts rotation. For students who want even more, Bigelow's After School Theater provides opportunities for everyone-- whether you're brand new to acting or an experienced performer.
The highlight of the program is the All-School Musical. Auditions are in December and EVERYONE who auditions will get a part. In addition to the musical, there is one play in the fall and one in the spring. 7th and 8th grade students have already auditioned for the fall play in June. In September, incoming 6th graders will have a chance to audition.
Early in the school year, there will be an after-school information session for students interested in doing theater at Bigelow.
