What is Newton’s risk level for EEE (Eastern Equine Encephalitis) and WNV (West Nile Virus)?
Newton’s current risk level (as of 9/10/19) is low for both WNV and EEE. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) regularly updates the risk level for WNV and EEE for all communities in the state. Several factors are a part of determining the level of risk assigned to a community. These include whether mosquitoes in that community have tested positive for a mosquito-borne disease and whether there have been any reported animal or human cases of WNV or EEE this season.

What can I do to protect myself from mosquito-borne diseases? Apply Insect Repellent when Outdoors. Use a repellent with an EPA-registered ingredient (DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8- diol (PMD)], or IR3535) according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age. Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, bed nets, and camping gear and should not be applied to the skin.
