Current Building Projects

The City and School Department continue to invest in upgrading Newton Public School buildings; an additional three major elementary school projects were proposed in the 2023 Debt Exclusion and Operating Override questions including: Countryside (replacement); Franklin (replacement) and Horace Mann (addition and additional renovations). The March 2023 Countryside and Franklin debt exclusion override questions passed; however, the operating override that included funding for the Horace Mann project did not.  Fortunately, Mayor Fuller was able to work with the Retirement Board to identify alternate funding for the Horace Mann project so that the project could also move forward.  Below is the anticipated timeline for completion of these three active construction projects. Additional information about these projects can be found on the individual project pages.

  • Horace Mann Elementary School - In construction, occupancy anticipated Sept. 2026
  • Countryside Elementary School - In construction, occupancy anticipated Jan. 2027
  • Franklin Elementary School - In construction, occupancy anticipated Feb. 2027

In addition to the three schools currently under construction, the district is beginning to plan for the next highest priority buildings, Ward (1928) and Underwood Elementary (1924) Schools, the oldest school buildings in the district. Information about planning for these schools can be found on the Long Range Planning and Building Projects page.
