On December 15, 2025, the Newton School Committee approved the Draft Long Range Facilities Plan that was presented by the Superintendent’s Long Range Planning Working Group (LRPWG). The Draft Long Range Plan reflects the District's current building priorities based on facility conditions, space utilization, enrollment projections, educational and programmatic needs.
The identified highest priorities in the Long Range Plan are the Ward and Underwood Elementary Schools, the two oldest school buildings in the district. Also, on December 15th, the School Committee voted to direct the district to complete Statements of Interest for both Ward and Underwood schools to be submitted to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) in April 2026, and to consider possible consolidation.
The MSBA is a state agency that helps fund school building projects in Massachusetts. Information about the MSBA and the Core Building Statement of Interest process can be found on the Massachusetts School Building Authority website.
Planning meetings were held with the Ward and Underwood School communities in October, November and December of 2025. Recordings of these meetings can be found at the NewTV website.
