NNHS Italy Exchange

The Italian Exchange program dates back to 1981, when we first began a cultural exchange with the Liceo Scientifico A. Gramsci school in Florence, Italy. For more than four decades, it has proved to be a cherished and formative experience for hundreds of students from both countries. The exchange begins in September when a group of Italian students and two of their teachers come to Newton, stay with host families, and attend our classes. Day trips around Boston and four days in New York complete their experience in the States. The following February, about 18 students and two chaperones from NNHS head to Italy for a three-week-long visit. Students attend school with their host “sibling,” visit the multitude of places of historical and cultural interest in Florence, and take day trips to several nearby cities including Rome, Bologna, Venice, Lucca, and Pisa.

Students usually meet at the hosting school in the morning where they either attend classes with their host students or work on assignments sent by their teachers at NNHS.

During lunch time students are independent. The group meets in the early afternoon and visits the many places of interest around Florence. Some days, we take field trips to cities such as Bologna, Rome, Venice, Lucca, and Pisa. that last the whole day, and students return to their families in the evening. When we are in Rome we spend our days discovering the many sites the Eternal City has to offer!
