The learning and development of a child does not stop when they get home. It is important that children learn to have a positive sense of self and have a respectful understanding of others. Resources such as this one can assist parents in creating a strong foundation that helps their children develop the skills necessary to navigate and blossom in a diverse world.

The month of May is established as Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month and we at NPS invite all educators, students and community members to learn more and to celebrate the voices and contributions of AAPI as a part of our collective American history.

Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration of the history and culture of the US Latinx and Hispanic communities. The event, which spans from September 15 to October 15, commemorates how those communities have influenced and contributed to American society at large.

Inclusive Schools Week celebrates the progress that schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to an increasingly diverse student population, including students who are marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference, and other factors. The Week also provides an important opportunity for educators, students and parents to discuss what else needs to be done in order to ensure that their schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children.

This year’s theme is “Unity in the Community".

Teaching Tolerance provides free resources to educators—teachers, administrators, counselors and other practitioners—who work with children from kindergarten through high school. Educators use our materials to supplement the curriculum, to inform their practices, and to create civil and inclusive school communities where children are respected, valued and welcome participants.

Every year on November 1, Native American Heritage Month is celebrated to honor the remarkable Native Americans who have contributed a lot to improve the character of the nation. This month is also referred to as the American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. November is the time to rejoice in diverse and rich cultures, histories, and traditions and to appreciate the great contributions of the Native Americans. 

This guide for teachers was created to help students recognize the beauty of each other, their sameness, and uniqueness. It also provides tips on how to encourage children to ask questions and create respectful relationships with their peers.
