Sustainable Transportation
Newton Public Schools is committed to promoting more active and sustainable transportation to school. Working closely with our city partners, new bike racks and shelters have been installed at schools to promote biking to school. In addition, many of our schools have Safe Routes to Schools groups who provide information on the best and safest ways to walk and bike to school. We are also working hard to streamline our bus registration process so that it is easier and more efficient for students to take the bus to and from school.
Newton Public Schools partners closely with the MA DOT Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program and has a SRTS Representative at every school. The Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Program works to increase safe biking and walking among elementary, middle, and high school students by using a collaborative, community-focused approach that bridges the gap between health and transportation.
There is a SRTS Representative at every Newton school and these representatives meet meet monthly as the Newton SRTS Task Force with city, school, City Council and School Committee members.
