Notice of Free and Reduced Meal Benefit Application
The Newton Public Schools will be participating in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. As part of this program, all Newton schools will offer healthy meals every school day.
The Massachusetts legislature has provided funding to make meals available at no cost to all students, regardless of household income. However, families should still complete a Meal Benefit Application as this provides data for key funding for academic resources and will also connect families to additional benefits such as Summer-EBT. This data will also support the additional funds provided by the Commonwealth for this program.
To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households can apply at MySchoolApps.. For more information, visit our Free and Reduced Meal Application page.

As a district that participates in the USDA National School Breakfast Program and National School Lunch Program, students are offered a variety of healthy options, including locally grown and sourced fruits and vegetables following the USDA guidelines of the program. New Food Service Provider - Chartwells
The Newton Public Schools was required to go out to bid during the 2023-2024 school year to secure a successor, five-year contract with a Food Service Company. Following a very structured process through the DESE Office of Food and Nutrition Programs, Newton was pleased to enter into a partnership with Chartwells as of July 1st.
Chartwells received the highest Highly Advantageous rating of the companies under consideration based upon nine required DESE criteria and nine Newton-specific criteria, for example: Years of General Manager Experience, Operational Strategy, Food Innovation, Staffing and Employee Retention Plan, and Sustainability.
Part of why Chartwells was chosen was for identifying an excellent management structure to support the size and complexity of the Newton Public Schools' Food Service program. The program will be led by Stacia Fritz, who comes to Newton with extensive culinary experience from the restaurant industry and after having served the Randolph Public Schools for six years with Chartwells.
We are looking forward to a great partnership with Chartwells to feed the students of Newton starting this fall.
