Federal regulations require that Whitsons, our food service partner, notify families of the “Big Nine” allergens found in food products. Those nine allergens are:
- Egg
- Fish
- Milk
- Peanut
- Sesame (added 1/1/23)
- Shellfish
- Soy
- Tree Nuts
- Wheat
We know that some families have students with additional allergens that could be found in meals served in the Newton Public Schools. All ingredients for every meal served can be found on the FDMealPlanner website. Type in “Newton” in the search box to see the monthly menus for each school.
Here is a little bit of information about how the site works for allergens.
- If your student has an allergy to one of the top nine allergens listed above, click on the “Allergen and Dietary” button at the top of the menu. Select your student’s allergen. All of the menu items with that allergen will appear crossed out on the monthly meal menu.
- If your student has an allergy to a different food item and you need to review all ingredients for each meal item, click on the “Build a Meal” button at the top of the menu. Select the date for which you want to review the menu. Then, click each menu item. The full list of ingredients will appear in the box.
Here is the full user guide for the FDMealPlanner website.
It is important to note that food vendors may change ingredients throughout the year. The FDMealPlanner is updated as soon as an ingredient list has changed. However, this may mean that a food product that was eaten earlier in the year may now contain an allergen.
If your student has a food allergy, we strongly encourage you to check the top nine allergen list and the full ingredient list as close to the day of the meal as possible.
Please reach out to our NPS business office if you have questions about school meals or difficulty navigating the food service website.
