We have put together a program for the evening that we hope will give you a warm introduction to our school and answers to more specific questions you may have. In advance of the event, we ask that you take some time to review material prepared and shared on the Class of 2027 pages of the NNHS website. In particular, you should read pages 2 through 13 of Opportunities, our Course Catalog. We highly recommend that parents/guardians and students attend this online event together to experience all that Newton North has to offer. Sessions will be recorded and posted later.
The evening begins at 6:00 pm with a welcome session that will be translated. You will hear from school leaders including: Principal, Henry Turner; Class of 2027 Dean of Beals House, Scott Heslin; Counseling Department Head, Beth Swederskas; and Vice Principal, Amy Winston.
6pm 8th Grade Night Overview
After the overview session, you will be able to attend a variety of sessions of your choosing. There will be at least 9 options and each session will be offered three times.

Career & Technical Education and Business
Speak with our Career and Technical Education (CTE) Director, Kathleen Duff, and CTE Counselor, Tuuli McElroy.
Learn about the wide array of CTE Exploratory courses open to incoming 9th graders and their potential pathways. Additionally, learn about our Business courses and certificate program.

Department Head Panel
Hear from the department heads of Math, English, Science, World Language, and History. They'll tell you about their 9th-grade programming and the philosophies of their departments.

English Language Arts Electives
Meet with teachers to hear about the several English electives that are specifically designed to meet the needs of rising 9th graders, including Journalism, and Speech. Hear about English electives specifically designed to meet the needs of rising 9th graders, including:
- Speech, a course for students to develop their skill at public speakingJ
- Journalism, a course in which students report and write about their community. Journalism offers a unique opportunity to get to know North and meets the prerequisites for joining the editorial staff of our school newspaper and website, The Newtonite

Speak with our Director of FPA and faculty to learn about the rich and varied offerings open to 9th graders.

Panel of NNHS Students
Interested in how North looks from a student’s point of view? Ready to discuss transition? Attend this panel discussion with Newton North students facilitated by Counseling Department Head, Beth Swederskas.

Session for Special Education
For parents and students who currently receive special education services, come meet the department heads for special education, and learn about the special education supports at Newton North.

Staying Fit at North
Department Head for Physical Education, Health and Wellness, Courtney Albert and Athletic Director Michael Jackson discuss their departmental philosophy, the various health and wellness offerings for 9th graders, and opportunities to get involved in athletics.

Sustainability at North
Hear from the teachers in our sustainability program and learn about the local issues, global issues, and interdisciplinary skills at the heart of our sustainability electives available to all grade levels.

Technology and Engineering
Speak with teachers about the variety of courses available to students in programs two main strands: robotics and engineering. Also learn about the engineering seal program.
