2023 Override Proposal
-
This fall, the City of Newton proposed three ballot questions to provide additional funding for public projects and operations. Newton City Council subsequently voted to place the two debt-exclusion questions and one override question before the voters of Newton. The questions will be decided upon by Newton voters on Tuesday, March 14, 2023.
Funding proposed in the debt-exclusions and the override is directed to the Newton Public Schools in three ways:
Override (Permanent increase in the levy limit of the city, beyond the allowable 2.5 percent)
- $4.5 million to NPS operating budget to sustain the current level of service and programming.
- $775,000 to Horace Mann Elementary for building addition
Debt-exclusion (Temporary tax increase to fund building projects. Once complete, the tax increase ends.)
- Countryside Elementary School Building Project - $2.3 million
- Franklin Elementary School Building Project - $3.5 million
