• Underclass Awards

    The department awards several honors to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors each year: 

     

    The Moyer Prize

    Named for former department chair Frances Moyer, the Moyer Prize is for one student that the English department feels has been remarkably open to learning all year.  This student took on new challenges this year, listened and learned, and used feedback remarkably well.  In doing so s/he brought out the best in him/herself and brought out the best in those around him/her. The 2018 winners were:

    Best Freshman Essay

    This award goes to the freshman who wrote the strongest essay of the year. The 2018 winners were Jackson Slater and Abby Matthews. 

    Best Sophomore Essay

    This award goes to the sophomore who wrote the strongest essay of the year. The 2018 winner was Lucy Chae.

    Best Junior Essay

    This award goes to the junior who wrote the strongest essay of the year. The 2018 Alana Aexlrod-Freed. 

    Best Personal Essay

    This prize, which is open to students in all grades, goes the student who wrote the strongest memoir or personal narrative. The 2018 winner was Jonathan Kronheimer. (Scroll down to read his piece.)
