Department Overview

  • Title 1 is a federal grant that was signed into law in 1965 and is now funded under the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2016.  Newton Public Schools has received Title 1 funding annually since the program began. Our Title 1 grant is written and submitted to the state every Spring and then updated throughout the year.  Schools are eligible for funding if they meet the grant criteria.  For the current school year, the schools that qualify for funding are, Lincoln Eliot, Zervas, Underwood and Burr. Other schools may be eligible for smaller amounts of funding for supplemental services as well.  Students at Title 1 schools who would benefit from support in math and literacy and or/ SEL (Social Emotional Learning) instruction are referred throughout the year.  Title 1 staff work with classroom teachers and specialists and are included in professional development opportunities.  Descriptions of each school program may be found on the specific Title 1 school site.

Families are encouraged to learn more about school programs and activities and are invited to participate in events at each of the Title 1 schools.  In the past, Title 1 schools have held family literacy and math game programs and new events are planned every year.  We welcome your feedback and invite you to contact us to find out more about the Title 1 grant.
