The John Ward School is an outstanding community of learners. We are a K-5 school with approximately 300 students. The faculty includes classroom teachers as well as teachers of art, music, physical education, library, special education, mental health professionals and numerous assistant teachers who are all committed to providing a challenging, supportive and exciting educational experience to all children. As a community we developed a set of Core Values to guide our work: respect, academic excellence, love of learning, and self-esteem. As with all Newton elementary schools, we believe in educating the whole child and provide a program that includes social-emotional learning through Open Circle, Responsive Classroom and Steps to Respect as well as Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies curricula. We use district benchmarks and assessments to guide our instruction. In addition to whole class instruction, students work in pairs, small groups or individually to complete assigned tasks. Technology is increasingly being integrated into lessons to enhance understanding and make information accessible.
