One School, One Book

Every student in every grade should read our One School, One Book choice for 2010 -

                                   This I Believe 2 by Jay Allison and Dan Gediman .

                            Unless your class is listed below, you should also read
                                         
                                         
Two books of your choice.

Some classes require specific summer reading:

Students entering Honors Sophomore English should read:
     Cat's Eye
by Margaret Atwood and Life of Pi   by Yann Martel, in addition to This I Believe 2 .

Students entering Honors Junior English should read:
     Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
by Mark Twain, and Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe,
     in addition to This I Believe 2 .

Students entering Honors Junior MGC (Modern Global Communities) should read:
     Passing by Nella Larsen, and Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, in addition to This I Believe 2 .

Students entering Senior MGC Shakespeare in the World should read:
     The Collector
by John Fowles, This I Believe 2, and one book of choice.

Students entering Senior Religion in Literature should read:
     The Abstinence Teacher
by Tom Perrotta, This I Believe 2 , and one book of their choice.

Students entering Honors Senior British Literature should read:
     Beowulf  
by Seamus Heaney, This I Believe 2 , and two books of choice.

Students entering African-American Literature should read:
     a book from the list below, This I Believe 2 , and one book of choice.

Students entering AP English Literature are required to read:
     All The King's Men by Robert Penn Warren, and Atonement by Ian McEwan, and should be prepared to compare
     the two works  during the first week of  school. Students should also read This I Believe 2 .

Students entering AP English Language should read:
     This I Believe 2
and one set of three books from a list available from the instructors,
     Mr. Baron( brian_baron@newton.k12.ma.us )  or  Mr. Kaplan (Alexander_kaplan@newton.k12.ma.us).

Summer Reading for African American Literature

Please choose one of the following biographies/autobiographies and read it thoroughly over the summer.   We will begin the year with work on this book.

If you are enrolled for curriculum one credit, you should challenge yourself to read a harder, longer book.   We urge you to go online and find out about the books before committing to one.
